2024:
Nearly 9 years later, this is still an seamlessly well-written debut that is instantly engaging and endearing, and hinting at a larger story hiding beneath the boards. It's truly a shame that the author is completely removed from the themes of her story about overcoming prejudice and valuing the nuances of real, messy, but ultimately beautiful relationships over entrenched ideologies. As a literary giant, it still holds up.
2015:
A wonderfully creative, whimsical foray into the wizarding world, J.K. Rowling paints the world of Hogwarts with a witty, earnest voice, making it easy for the readers to care about our socially awkward friends. One would expect Harry Potter himself to have the cliche "chosen one" arc, but Rowling injects Potter with enough pathos and humanity to ensure that he is his own character: destined, to be sure, but a noble, caring, and endlessly interesting character in his own right. The gradual, natural development of the friendship between Harry, Ron, and Hermione is truly heartwarming, and I look forward to their adventures to come. I will say that the book does not mesh very well as a complete work, the ending feels a bit rushed almost as if it got to the climax only for the pay-off to disappear entirely... However, the book was such a captivating, funny, and heartfelt read that I almost didn't notice. Excellent first novel, and one of the best examples of world-building I have seen an author do.

just reviewing every single book i've ever read rn don't mind me
I love this book for nostalgia reasons. The world building and introduction to characters. But compared to other books the plot just doesn’t quite stack up to the others. Still enjoy it every time I reread it.

On the umpteenth read (though the first in quite a while), what really struck me was how HUGE Hogwarts feels in this book. Corridors and galleries and empty rooms and Harry getting lost all over the place. As he gets older (and learns all the secret passages), it seems to shrink.
Which, oddly, is the inverse of what happens in the movies, since they were able to build more and more sets each time around.
Goddamn, I love these books.

4,5

I don't really know what to say, I was very young when I read it, I just remember that it was the most boring of the saga so I give it 2.5 stars.
