I'd recommend the audiobook for this one. As a fan of Fran Lebowitz, I had an inkling the reader was best served as a narrated piece. I've seen other reviews and have guessed that perhaps the paperback does not deliver with the same dry charisma that's so enjoyable in an audio piece.
The format made it a great listen in smaller chunks - perfect for public transport and short walks.

‘Owing to the conditions that currently prevail in the world of letters, it is now possible for a girl to be ruined by a book. Owing, in fact, to the conditions that currently prevail in the world of letters, it is now possible for a boy to be ruined by a book.
A book, of course, is not the only danger, for things have come to such a pass that a magazine is safer than a book only to the extent that it is shorter. But magazines all too frequently lead to books and should be regarded by the prudent as the heavy petting of literature.
This warning should be heeded by all concerned, and in order to bring about a less perilous printed environment, I offer the following tips on how to avoid the reading and/or writing of ruinous material’

As a longtime Fran Lebowitz fan this collection of her essays has been on my shelf for absolutely AGES and, despite hearing snippets of the audiobook as my other half listened, I have only just got round to reading it!

For those who don’t know of Fran, she is a social commentator who cut her very witty teeth writing for Andy Warhol’s magazine in the seventies. She also happens to share a birthday with me so I’m in very good company! Her dry sense of humour and astute observations are laugh out loud funny and, whilst some of the scenarios she writes about may be outdated (but still very interesting for those who wish they’d been born a few decades earlier!) her scathing put-downs and DILLIGAF attitude are unrivalled!

Tackling subjects like the arts, science and life in New York City, her opinions are interesting, well-written and very very funny. This is a treat to read but honestly the audiobook, narrated by the author is definitely what I’d recommend!

I really wanted to like this, but alas, I think it doesn't hold up very well. I thought the first 50 pages or so were funny in a very "it's an artifact of its times" way but then it just started to feel kind of tedious and repetitive. I like an acerbic writer but this just wasn't it for me.
