Finished reading this to the girls tonight. Book about a fairy and her Mummy. What's not to love

Fixerido! Mjölkerido! Stopperido!Osynligero! Kakerido! (Scooby Doo?)

What do you get when your mom is a fairy... but not fairy good at it?

You get this book, which features several short stories about Ella and her mom. From making cupcakes to grocery shopping, everything seems normal... until the mom tries her magic!

I thought this would just be one big story, but instead it was all short stories featuring various events and spells. Which was even better! It made it much more doable to read, and much more fun. Plus that way I didn't frustrate myself over the mom so much.

Ella was definitely the best character, I love how she kept her cool more than once, and helped her mom out when she was in a pinch. I am sure she will be a great fairy one day, hopefully she can start her training soon. I can't wait to see how she looks as a fairy.
I did want to give her a hug at times, because of that mean girl Zoe. I did think Ella was pretty brave for trying to stand up for herself.

I have to say that while I did like the stories, and often was laughing (but also cringing at times), I didn't like the mom that much. Yes, she tried, but how can one suck so much at this. Given there are tutorials, lessons, she got a great mom, a sister who is also good, you would think she learned in all those years. But it seems she can't do anything. No matter how easy the spells are she bodges it up, and frankly? It was funny and OMG once or thrice, but it got a bit old. Of course there were spells she can do, thankfully, so she isn't a total klutz, but still... It seems to be more luck than wisdom that she gets it right at times. And then there was that whole being sick story, and I just wondered if the mom was 2 instead of 30/40-ish. Setting a good example for your kids right there.

I am also not sure about the little brother. I get that he is tiny, and he doesn't get the consequences, but I did agree with Ella, it did seem he was doing it all on purpose. :|

Bonus points go to the illustrations. Those really made me want to read further, as I just wanted to see more of this silly family. I wanted to see more sparkles and fun spells.

The spells all seem a bit simple, but it apparently also requires a code, which I did think was a nice addition. Plus knowing that there are also wands that are old-fashioned (with a star on top!) is fun.

All in all, a quick and pretty fun read. Again, I just adore the illustrations. Definitely planning to check what other works the illustrator did!

I grabbed Fairy Mom and Me from the library shelves because I have enjoyed reading Sophie Kinsella's novels for adults. They have a light sense of play and good-heartedness that's nice to cruise through every once in a while for pure enjoyment. When I saw she had written the first in a series of books for kids I had high hopes.

The premise of Fairy Mom and Me is that the main character--Ella Brooks--comes from a family of Fairies. Her mother, grandmother and aunt are all fairies. (Her father and baby brother are NOT.) Ella's mother has told her that the girls in their family grow up to be fairies, so Ella is anxious to be able to do magic spells when she is older. Ella's mother is not particularly skilled at magic and often makes mistakes when trying to cast spells. This construct provides the structure for the theme of the story: patience and/or working for something yourself is better/more rewarding than having it magically appear.

There are some worthwhile messages in Fairy Mom and Me. Although they occasionally make unwise or selfish choices when motivated by anger or indignance, the characters (children and adults) realize their mistakes and set things right. I can absolutely see the beginning reader audience for which is intended enjoying it as a read-aloud or an independent read. The illustrations by Marta Kissi are a great addition to the text, as they are fun and full of character. The story, itself, reads like a run-of-the-mill sitcom, using slapstick stretched to ridiculous proportions in what feels like an overly contrived attempt at humor. Again, that's my perception as an adult--young readers will not see the devices being used by the author, but rather, will enjoy the silliness.

I actually love silliness when it's done well, but this one feels to me like being able to see the puppeteer working the puppets instead of being drawn into the story so deeply that you forget you are watching puppets. Although there is nothing really wrong with Fairy Mom and Me and I'm sure there are young readers out there who will enjoy it, I cannot recommend it.

A fun parent-child relationship, where the kid has more common sense than her mother.

This book made me giggle. It was a fun read. Ella's mom is a fairy, but not very good at magic. Ella gets to be a fairy when she grows up. There is one girl Zoe I didn't like her, cause she's a bully! Other than her, I liked the others. Ella is my favorite. Was a good read. I will read more in the series.

So obviously a children's book, but had the Sophie Kinsella quirkiness, very cute.
