Thank you to NetGalley, Random House Publishing Group and Ballantine Books for the opportunity to read and review this book.

This is the second book I have read by Coco Mellors, and once again, I am not disappointed.
The Blue Sisters, all unique in their own way. Raised in a home where the eldest sibling is more of the mother than the actual mother. The father is a violent alcoholic. Now the story is told from present day, and the sister Nicky has passed away.
This story really hits home for me. I too grew up in a less than ideal home environment, and I have 5 siblings. My siblings and I have dealt with tragic loss much like the sisters in the story. The sisters constantly questioning what could they have done differently made me cry. The grief in this book was really moving.
The end also had me in tears. After everything that happened, it was a wonderful way to close out then story.

I can’t argue with the writing, it was often beautiful and emotional and poignant, but I’m not sure how I feel about the rest of it. This book was perhaps a bit long and often repetitive, and the sisters were mostly described to me, especially in the beginning. The characters felt a bit caricature-y, like the classic elder sister who is everyone’s mom, a middle child who floats around, and the youngest wild child who does whatever they want. There’s obviously some truth to this, these kinds of characters are common for a reason, but I wanted something more than that. Their relationship felt very real but also overdone. The ending was way too sweet and neat, I just didn’t buy their resolutions and dialogue. The mediation on grief and love and unburdening yourself from unhelpful expectations was good, but I just think other books/works have done this in more nuanced and interesting ways.

Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors was heartbreaking and definitely not an easy read, but it is worth it. Please keep in mind that this story deals heavily with addiction, overdose, and loss. It also deals with the fact that addiction itself can be and commonly is a genetic disposition with only one of the four sisters having never struggled with it because she was addicted to boxing instead of drugs.

PROS:
💊None of the addiction that is presented is the same. Each characters struggles are unique and feel more real for it.
🥊The spiral each sister had after the death
💊The way each of them comes to terms with the loss
🥊The connection found in the change

CONS:
💊The only people harder on you than yourself are the people that know you the best
🥊Lots of miscommunication
💊The mom’s absolute refusal to accept that her husband and children have addiction issues

🚬🚬🚬🚬🚬out of five smokes bummed off some random dude in Central Park
