Werewolves, cool. Then I finished the first chapter and thought "Uh oh, what kind of a grim slog have I signed up for? I'm not really a horror person, am I going to be okay here?" Answers: moderately grim, but not steadily as gut punchy as the first chapter, and ... mostly, yeah. I read this for a book club and it's not my usual jam, but the writing won me over. In particular, the family stories that were always made up but also always true, and the way those stories would come back. These characters were real enough to me that I got really frustrated with them. Especially in light of the ending. I want to talk to someone about that last long chapter, please, and the impact and the reason for introducing all that stuff that our characters coulda shoulda known, if only.

gory, visceral and so real it felt like i could reach out and touch the wolf's fur. i love werewolves and mongrels tied the wolf in with the realities of the rural working class in a way that makes sense. the wolf making fake silver bullets, all the stories and the howling <3
