This book took me by complete surprise. I went into this book completely blind and was expecting another fun enemies to lovers rom com but this book is truly so much more than that. We have Liya, a strong and fierce MC that is not afraid to speak up for herself and her friends. And that's why people in her community don't necessarily like her. Jay is the perfect man and even though Liya does her best to push him away, he doesn't let her. The way that he cares for people and gives everyone a fair chance is just *chef's kiss* I could really go on and on about this book, I think everyone needs to read this one!

Quite cheesy, a lot of misogyny and poor example of “feminism” (read: “I’m a strong independent girl and different from other girls” vibe 😐), unrealistic dialogue, very rushed and …cringe worthy ending. Overall a flop.

I'm so sad this book didn't work for me. The story was fine, but there were just too many things that bothered me.

First of all, I really didn't like how rude both MCs were towards each other in the beginning without any reasons. It didn't make sense, since it seemed they were polite to everyone else. Liya was especially annoying throughout the book. Not only was she rude and completely unnecessarily defensive in every situation, but her mixed signals were really getting on my nerves. Give the man a break, if you think yes, say yes. If you say no, don't expect him to ask again (even though he does which is a completely different set of problems). The whole plot is basically Liya being stubborn even though she wants to be with Jay.

Also, I didn't appreciate the whole judgemental attitude against one-night stands and sex. It was not subtle at all. It's one thing if it's the society enforcing these attitudes on somebody, but another if the whole book is permeated with it. Liya says on multiple occasions that she's not a "whore", and there are whole conversations about her and her "type", but this is not challenged. The only thing that was challenged was the fact that Liya is not like those other girls.

Added to that
there was Liya's insistence that Jay only wants to take her on a date because of her reputation and because he wants to sleep with her... And then him saying that he doesn't at all (lol, what?). Why is the fact that he wants to sleep with her a bad thing? It's not like that would be the only thing he wanted from her. I didn't get it. I should hope that the person I like would want to sleep with me, provided that s/he is not ACE.

The last thing I will mention here. Why are all the men that come on to Liya so disgusting? I've never heard a man in real life explicitly say that he bought sex with a few drinks or a dinner. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but literally every man in this book?

All in all, I wasn't a fan.

Such a good book.
She struggles with the fact that she was sexually assaulted by someone respected in her community. I was scared it wouldn't end well, but luckily it did.
Loved it! You should definitely read it
