I really liked tis book and i am for sure going to read the upcoming books. Cassandra Claire has wrote many many books. And in all her books the characters are aged between 16-19 years old so I was surprised that the characters in this story was 12 years old. But I am hoping that over time they will age and we can see a romance come between two of the characters (really hoping its Cal and Tarrisa) but other than that I really liked the story it was a short read for a Cassandra Claire book but it was amazing

This book was ok. I felt that it was a bit too much like Harry Potter and I am not really a fan of those books. This is about children that go to magic school where they learn to develop their powers. I thought the world could have been developed more as at times it was a bit consuming. A lot of time is spent developing the characters and talking about the tasks that the Mages set them to do. I thought more could have been done on the action, history of the school and the different powers. I thought the characters were quite bland and I didn't feel connected to any of them.

I thought the plot twist was very interesting and it is one of the main reasons that I might consider reading the other books in the series.

the Harry Potter read-alike you've been looking for, with twists you won't see coming. also for Percy Jackson fans wherein we find a more successful "Percy" in Callum.

It’s difficult not to compare this to the Harry Potter series since there are many similarities. It’s hard to live up to the Harry Potter which I consider one of the all time great series but that doesn’t mean this one isn’t very enjoyable on its own merits. I like the characters and the story. It’s always fun for me to read about newly created magical worlds and this one is well done.

My only complaint and it’s honestly nitpicking at this point but I wasn’t a fan of some of the created names for people and things i.e. Enemy of Death and Chaos-Ridden. They just don’t hit for me. As someone who is an aspiring fantasy author, I understand it’s very difficult to create uniquely cool sounding names for this stuff.

A solid 4 stars for book 1 and I am looking forward to continuing the series.

Throughout reading this book I kept thinking to myself "I'm so glad that I'm reading this now." because I feel that this book series will be something. In a few years, I believe, it could be as near and dear to the hearts of many as some of our most popular fantasy books are. And I can't wait for that day to come. I also can't wait to see how Call, Aaron and Tamara all develop from here and what great journeys they'll go on. I'm not one for long reviews so I'll just highly recommend this book and leave it to you to form your own opinion.

I was almost getting Harry Potter feels (but no comparison there), but the end turned out to be some sort of a twist.
Looking forward to seeing how the series progresses!

All his life, Callum Hunt has been told by his father not to trust the mages or The Magisterium since his mother died in The Cold War many years before. When he is called forward to complete the Iron Trial The Magisterium, he sets out to fail. To his surprise, he is chosen to attend the school, even though he received the lowest score during the Trial. Forming a group with two other apprentices, Tamara and Aaron, Callum begins working with Master Rufus to learn how to control his magic in his first year at The Magisterium.

The pacing was way to slow for my liking until the last 75 pages or so - I felt extremely bored with the story and as if not much was happening. I was originally going to give the book 2 stars, but bumped it up to 3 solely because of the ending. I enjoyed the magic system of this book and how it is linked to the elements. The humour in the book was fun, although at times it got annoying... I didn't like Callum at the beginning, I found him to be annoying and rude. He did end up growing on me by the end of the book though. Aaron was definitely my favourite of the trio, he was so sweet and you could tell he has a big heart. Tamara was mediocre to me, I didn't find her to be anything special.

I am interested to see where the story progresses, but I'm not DYING to pick up the sequel.

Ok, I'll admit, I didn't really see that coming.
And the last 30 or so pages were pretty good.
But neither of those things change the fact that it took me 2 weeks to read a 200 page book, and I didn't really enjoy the first 180 pages.

Gonna be honest. Měla jsem příliš velká očekávání. Největším mínusem knihy je pro mě její jazyk. Ten mi, tak nějak, zkazil požitek z knihy. Druhý díl ještě zkusím, ale moc velké šance tomu zase nedávám. 2.5*
