I bought the last book for my son not realizing it was the last book. So then I got this one on audio from my library and meant to Listen to it with my son, But I ended up listening to it after my son fell asleep and finished it alone. Haha then couldn't get the second book from my library without waiting a while, so I got it off audible just so I could listen to it asap! Really enjoyed this complicated little story!

First, I listened to this book, and the narrator did it no favors. His voice was fairly monotone and robotic, and actually reminded me of the "text to speech" computer voices.

I went into this book with...middling hopes. I love Holly Black, and think Cassandra Clares books are ok to awful, depending on the book. My issue with Clare is her apparent lack of ideas (seriously, she's put the same shadowhunter trilogy out like three times now, she just keeps changing character names, or revisiting an old series and telling the same story), but Holly Black seems like a fount of ideas, so I thought she might make up for Clare. Unfortunately, she did not.

The book was predictable and kind of boring. Things pick up at the end, but not enough to make up for a what turns out to be a fairly pedestrian middle-grade fantasy read.

Also, is it just me, or does this thing have a lot in common with Harry Potter? It reads like a bit of a rip-off. And not a good rip-off, at that.

I would've probably given this book 1 star, but the ending (like the last few paragraphs) was pretty great. 2 stars.

I didn't hate it but I didn't really enjoy it either.

Cassie Clare is one of my favorite authors and I really loved The Folk of the Air series by Holly Black, and so I knew I would enjoy this book. And I was right! I didn’t know that this book had elemental magic, which is something I love in fantasy so I really enjoyed the magic system and world. The characters are also really charming and their friend dynamic is really sweet. I also really liked the audiobook as well and I’m super excited to continue in the series!

On initially starting this, It appeared to be a bit of a Harry Potter clone - boy goes to wizard school - but by about half way through, there was a minor revelation (mostly unexpected) and a bigger major one at the end of the book that has me intrigued to at least *maybe* read the next one.
However, the prose is very much aimed at a teenage audience and doesn't really feel unique or special in any way (which HP did when it first came out - it's style was *different* to earlier YA fantasy books). In the end, I'd recommend this for young teens who want to read some fantasy, but I feel it lacks a bit for adults who want a bit more depth in their fantasy worlds.
