While the Harry Potter parallels were obvious, it was still a fun story with good character development. I’m going to recommend this to my younger kids (ages 11-14.) my older ones might like it, too.

Okay, well, this book was much better than I expected.

This has actually been on my to-read list for a while, longer than I've had my goodreads account. And now, I finally got to read it, and I'm really glad I did. This book was so good, with all the plot twists, and character development and world-building. I guess it is meant for a younger audience, children or maybe the younger side of YA, but I still thought it was great. Which is impressive because now when I read books for younger audiences, I get really annoyed at the characters and sometimes things are insanely obvious to the reader and when the characters find out, it's supposed to be some hugely dramatic scene but it just makes me roll my eyes.

Also, I want to say how much I liked the plot of the book. I guessed some things, but not everything was super obvious and then there was this one twist that completely caught me by surprise. I love it when books do that.

Mixed feelings on this one. I really enjoyed the setting, the mix between modern life and magic. And the main character was quite likeable, although prickly enough. But I found the story sometimes didn't make sense and was often implausible. I don't know if I'll read more in this series or not. I think maybe I'm too old for the book. Kids might enjoy it though. I liked the little wolf cub.

Cassandra Clare and Holly Black can never disappoint!!!

I loved this book and I'm pretty sure I'll end up loving this whole series. Also, this book was more fun to read because my friend Booknerd read this with me. Thanks<3

So , What's it about?
Callum Hunt knows that he can do magic but his father has also always warned him that magic is not good. So when Callum is called to give a test for getting into Magisterium, the school for all mages, he tries very hard to fail but in the end, he is picked up by a master and has to go the school. Initially, Call despises everything about Magisterium but eventually grows up to like it.

About the characters
I liked Call and I loved Aaron. It's so hard not to love them. I didn't like Tamara in the beginning because she gave off strong Hermione vibes and I've never really liked the book Hermione except in Prisoners of Azkaban, so it was hard to like her but as the story proceeded, I came to like her as well.

The book was amazing and funny and the plot twist, in the end, was totally unpredictable.

Yes, at first glance it seems like a very Harry Potter rip off. However it is just similar enough to Harry Potter to contain complete awesomeness and adventure that makes you want to keep reading, but different enough that it is original and interesting. The characters themselves are fresh and inspiring and nothing like anyone from Harry Potter. So if you're expecting to read this thinking it's just like the good Ol' series about a boy wizard, think again. Its dark and beautifully constructed story line will leave you turning pages.
