Absolutely loved it! Between Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, the first book from the Magisterium series shows a lot of promise and definitely has the material to go far!
What is the story about? Callum Hunt, a 12 year old kid, was born with magic but has always been told by his father that he should never use it. His father tells him that magic is dangerous, that older mages use younger mages for their own sinister purposes and that they will manipulate him. When the time comes for Callum to take his entry test, the Iron Trial at the Magisterium, things don't go as expected. Instead of not using magic, Callum produces very powerful uncontrolled magic that leaves an impression. When he's chosen to be an apprentice, he doesn't know how much his life will change. Living in deep underground caves and tunes, separated from his father, Callum will learn the truth about magic and most importantly, himself.
I highly enjoyed this book in full. Really liked the system of magic and the Magisterium, the Iron Trial and the tasks and the magic teaching system. Very creative and refreshing!
I fell in love with the characters. Callum is a victim of bullying in the "human" world because of a serious leg injury that leaves him limping, probably for the rest of his life. On the contrary of what we read in the Harry Potter saga, Callum doesn't want to be a mage, he doesn't want to be an apprentice in the Magisterium. But he fails at failing, completely. He doesn't trust people and always expects the worse from them but, at the same time, he's courageous and is eager to prove that his leg doesn't define him and that he can actually be good at something.
The supporting characters are also very good. Tamara and Aaron really bring some fun and spice to Callum's life along with Jasper that becomes his rival from day 1.
I don't have enough words to recommend this book. It's highly addictive, impossible to put down, packed with adventures, action and magic. A must-read!

Really, really enjoyed it - much more than I expected to actually. It's not a masterpiece of a book, but I think I read it in the ideal way - very fast! There's no time to get annoyed or bogged down with Harry Potter similarities (yes, they're there but stories are all borrowed and copied, get over it) and I LOVED the twist - made it very unique, and I truly didn't see it coming.
I found it slightly annoying that they ticked the equalities box very efficiently with one character who is both female and of ethnic origin... Oh well.
Basically, I enjoyed it, more than I should - having a signed copy by BOTH authors certainly doesn't hurt ;)

I feel like this is kind of Harry-Potter-meets-Divergent. I picked it up to procrastinate, and ended up finishing it in a few hours. Strongly recommend.
I have mixed feelings about this book.
I loved the overall concept of this book and even though many people have compared it to Harry Potter I found that the majority of the main plot points were quite unique. However, I feel like the ending was a bit rushed and that it could have been stretched out a bit more to give readers longer to absorb all the information being chucked at them. I think I will continue this series though, since the plot idea is quite intriguing.

The book is written at a middle grade level, but the writing isn’t childish. I think that people of all ages would like it. The characters are well written and the authors give a lot of detail. The plot twist at the end was something I didn’t except. I can’t wait for the next book in the series.
Yes, definite HP correlations, but kind of like mixing content from all seven books into one much more condensed novel. This is book 1, so I'm expecting more originality and higher stakes in the next books in the series.
It's pretty cool Call is not able-bodied and that he let's the reader know when his leg still bothers him and prevents him from some major heroics towards the end of the book. It's an obvious reminder that not everyone is strong in similar ways and needs help from time to time. Being a member of a team definitely trumps being an individual in the IRON TRIAL.
All in all, decent start to a school fantasy series for the next generation of fans of that genre.

I don't read a lot of Middle Grade books these days, but this one was great. Despite the fact that the characters are a decade younger that me, I really liked every single one of them and felt connected to their story.
The Iron Trial starts out as kind of your typical outcast boy discovers he's magic and gets to leave his formerly terrible and lonely life to go to magic school. But there are some pretty surprising and dark twists by the end of this book. Excited to see how it all plays out.

North Carolina Battle of the Books title.
Has a feel of being a post-Harry Potter story with Holly Black's dark spin.

Świat magii przyciąga do siebie w magiczny sposób. Magiczne istoty, magiczne przedmioty i magiczne czary.
“[Magisterium] Jest pogrzebane tam, gdzie nikt go nie znajdzie.
