This was a really sweet book. A little meta- a book about a man who finds things and their stories… and he writes stories about the things he finds. I had a hard time keeping the two parallel narratives straight for a while, but it came together in the end.

Forty years ago, Anthony Peardew carelessly lost a keepsake from his beloved fiancée. After her death, Anthony becomes “the keeper of lost things” by rescuing lost objects—the things others have dropped, misplaced, or accidentally left behind. Now, in the twilight of his life, Anthony worries that he has not fully discharged his duty to reconcile all the lost things with their owners. As the end nears, he bequeaths his secret life’s mission to his unsuspecting assistant, Laura, leaving her his house and all its lost treasures, including an irritable ghost. Magical, indeed!
Personal note: The wedding/funeral scene in Chapter 21 is worth the price of the book!

Heartwarming, sad, and affirming. This tale of lost items and second chances really pulls at the heart strings. Laura has loved working for Anthony Peardew. He is the perfect boss and being his "writing assistant" at his beautiful British estate gives her a sense of purpose. Her elderly employer is a bit of a recluse and spends a lot of his time in his study. After he passes and she discovers that she has inherited his entire estate, she finally ventures into the mysterious study and is amazed by what she finds. Tucked away on shelves and in drawers are hundreds, perhaps even thousands of small items carefully cataloged. A biscuit tin, a puzzle piece, an umbrella, a teddy bear. The contents o the study are all lost items that Anthony discovered and took home to keep safe, hoping to reunite them all with their owners. The Keeper of Lost Things isn't just Laura and Anthony's story however, we get glimpses into the lives of so many others, Sunshine the overly friendly neighbor, Eunice and Bomber, Freddy the gardener and so many more. Touching and heartfelt. Such a genuine story!
