There were things about this that I genuinely loved and enjoyed and were solid 3-star level for me: the whole primary concept of imagining the stories behind things that are lost, and the exploration of the effect loss has on us, and the reasons why things get lost... or "lost". The resulting layers upon layers of story was creative and truly lovely.

But the effect was spoiled for me, more generally by some flaws in the storytelling, and more specifically for me personally, by some content-related issues. Taking a step back to see the big picture, one can see how the story flows, and the interconnected story lines weave over time - some moving through larger swaths of time than others, but all arriving at the same place at the end - but in the middle of it, it's a bit murky and definitely disjointed. We move from one scene to another quite rapidly, and there are so many POV's and characters it's hard to keep track of it all. Ultimately, I think the author just had too many threads going and could have simplified just a bit to keep the story really tight. Also, the writing was inconsistent - sometimes eloquent and elegant, but sometimes quite stodgy and elementary.

It was a beautiful idea with somewhat flawed execution. I can see why many people would love this book with its themes of loss and recovery and moving on and for the moments of truly exceptional writing.

I enjoyed 1/4 of this book and then I couldn't read it anymore. I kept hoping it would pick up enough to keep my interest but it didn't. I wish I could have finished it but I found myself forcing myself to read it and life is just too short to read boring books. The concept of the story sounds so interesting and exactly like something I would love to read but I just couldn't get into it.

A very warm hearted book about loss and closure but also finding joy in the little things. I appreciated the storylines and storytelling but at times it felt a bit sluggish.
But I think I would recommend it to friends! 3.5/5.

I wanted to like this book. I felt confused to the plot even 75 pages in. I had no connection to the characters. The flipping between two story lines made it even more confusing. The writing seemed very poetic but I wasn’t being pulled into it. I really wish I could have loved it.
