I think Kelly Bowen might be one of my new favourite regency era authors. She doesn't seem to favour the miscommunication tropes that are so common in the genre and it's delightful. This was a great little novella that gave depth to a recurring character in her other series.

Why do people feel the need to create the main male character as a dark, tall, foreboding, impatient, talented, skilled, angsty, angry, callous, accusing, mean, self-important, jealous, close minded, haughty, self, superior, angry, annoyed, untrusting, and suspicious at the beginning if the book when he meets the heroine???? Also, why do people like that kind of character? It is EXHASTING to read about a male who is all those things I mentioned above at the beginning of the book. As the book progresses, he thaws out. The ending is beautiful!
I am not going to rate this book, because I feel conflicted. I am mad at the hero for being so insufferable at the beginning of the book and being so accusing when he finds out her secret. Seriously, I get that he was wronged by a titled lady, but that does not mean all titled ladies are like that. I mean, being one, I am sure he has heard of stereotypes about street urchins (sorry for using this term). He can attest not all of those are true. Similarly, not all titled ladies, especially one who has been so good to him would be like the woman Lady Cecile who hurt him.

A lovely story to start the year with! The long-ish length of this novella gave Charlie and Flynn time to come to know each other before they started falling in love (or even lust, since Charlie is in disguise at first!). Having them connect over their love of painting gave the two a chance to have deeper conversation earlier in their relationship, so that they were friends well before they become lovers. Of course there is a bit of omission of information on Charlotte's part, and the resulting misunderstanding, jumping to conclusions, and storming off in a huff on Flynn's part. Thankfully Charlotte handles the situation well with a grand gesture, and Flynn isn't too stubborn to say he was wrong.

I do want to know what Charlotte's new commission is, and how she'll handle her deb to King, and what her life will look like after making a large decision regarding her family, so I hope there will be more books to come in the series and she and Flynn will be able to pop up. I also want to know what's up with King, so I guess I should read the rest of the novels in this series!

2.5 stars, to me this really didn't fit the Season for Scandal series.

emotional inspiring

This was included in my copy of Grace Burrowes’ Forever and A Duke and is my first read by this author. I really enjoyed this! The plot was so interesting to me, I love secret gender plots like these that remind of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night because it all has an underlying queer theme that may or may not be intended at all but makes it enjoyable for me! The chemistry was sizzling and Bowen is so good at writing love scenes. Sensual, romantic, and enjoyable, what more could you ask for? I did want to know more about the King character but honestly he really didn’t matter at all me lol.

I enjoyed this story of a female coming out of her imposed shell to persue her art.

Charlotte, becomes Charlie to be able to paint murals for a church.
hopeful

This is a fun, entertaining, quick read. Flynn and Charlotte are interesting, wounded, intriguing, entertaining, complex, strong characters. I enjoyed their romance and the path it took to get to their HEA. Bowen packs a lot into less than 110 pages. The secondary characters added to the fabric of the story and my enjoyment. The story is easy to read and enjoy. While one of the side characters from the other books in the A Season for Scandal series makes an appearance, that is the only overlapping character. This book can be read as a stand alone.
