Going into this book, I was really excited for something that I wasn't expecting to be a great book. Unfortunately, I didn't feel this way as I read Every Day. I think this is mainly because YA just doesn't seem to interest me as much anymore.
This book went by very quickly and was easy to read, but I just felt like there wasn't much substance to it. Yes, I understand the goal of making A gender neutral and what Levithan was trying to accomplish there, but I just wasn't impressed by this book. It didn't interest me as much as I was hoping it would and because of that, it fell very flat for me. I really wanted to love this book, but it just wasn't for me. I don't think I'll be continuing with Another Day because the story just doesn't have my interest.
I do think it was written very well and it was an interesting concept, I just lost interest as I read it.

i'd actually read Another Day before this, so i was basically already spoiled, but hoo
So. Let's get this out of the way first: the romance was mediocre. I don't think "love at first sight" type romances are ever going to resonate with me, but trust me, once you've stripped Levithan's pretty prose from their relationship they're just attracted to each other... because. I hardly know anything about Rhiannon, so I didn't really feel for A falling for her. (AND I READ HER POV FIRST, Y'ALL. I STILL DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY SEE IN EACH OTHER.) Also the Reverend Poole subplot was cool but it ended a little too ambiguously for my taste, idk.
But, I still give it four stars (3.5 stars, really) because it's a REALLY CLEVER CONCEPT, and seeing who A would be each chapter was fun. I liked the little glimpses into each person's life, and especially loved the funeral scene, since the effects of A's existence just really HITS then. A lot of reviews point out that the rules behind A's existence are never really explained, but I don't really care for that; dude changes bodies with nearby 16-year-olds every midnight. Just don't ask questions, man. I mean, damn, if this novel was about A's crush on Rhiannon sparking their search to find others like them, this would be GOLDEN. But NO, the romance HAD to be the focus, and Justin had to stand there cartoonishly the whole time. Wasted potential, really, but I had a good time so yeah

Suka sama ide ceritanya. Suka sama eksekusinya, sama writing style-nya David Levithan, tokoh-tokohnya, semuanyaa. Ide ceritanya agak ngingetin sama The Time Traveler's Wife, tapi yang ini versi YA, and it was more tender, and wiser. Melalui tokoh A, yang tiap hari bangun dalam tubuh remaja yang berbeda-beda, merasuki kehidupan seseorang yang beda-beda selama sehari seumur hidupnya, David Levithan dengan sangat jenius bisa menjangkau macam-macam problematika remaja yang cakupannya luas. Dari remaja normal, yang depresi, yang brengsek, yang homoseksual, yang junkie, yang keluarganya broken home, yang orangtuanya otoriter, yang obesitas, sampai yang tukang bully pun semuanya sempat dirasuki A. Etnisnya pun beragam: white, black, chinese, portugis, gendernya bisa cewek, cowok, sampai transgender juga pernah. Tiap hari seumur hidupnya he/she walks in other people's shoes, nggak heran karakter A jadi wise banget, tapi sekaligus tetep kayak remaja biasa. Suka banget, banget, gimana David Levithan bisa ngegambarin kehidupan semua remaja yang beda-beda itu dengan kekhasan masing-masing.
Suka juga sama karakter Rhiannon, biasa banget tapi ya wajar, manusiawi. Manis tapi agak ambekan, baik banget tapi kadang-kadang nggak bisa ngertiin A. Suka sama penggambaran hubungan A dan Rhiannon yang juga manis banget, tapi nggak lebay, nggak cengeng berlebihan. Yaudahlah. Dibilang di awal kayaknya nggak ada yang nggak aku suka dari buku ini, suka semuanya.
Berharap banget ada penerbit Indonesia yang mau nerjemahin ini. Walaupun beberapa isu mungkin sensitif, tapi moralnya pun dapet banget ;w;

This was a great book in some aspects. I read it very fast, in one afternoon - I bought it as a present because the plot interested me and I wanted to know, before I give it to my friend, if the book is any good. I ended up reading the whole book and I think the idea is pretty refreshing and I can't say anything bad about the writing style either. However, it is not that memorable, I usually forget I even read it, and I think the subject could have been handled better - it is just a little bit too cheesy for me. I'd still recommend it though, I feel like for someone this could be unforgettable experience.

it was... okay. the concept was great, i love the idea of someone waking up in a different body every day. but the way it was executed... not so much.
a apparently falls in love with rhiannon in the space of one day. they fall in love with her so much that they decide to ruin other people's lives just to hang out with her, and then belittle her for loving her boyfriend, asking why they can't be together, etc etc and i really don't see how rhiannon managed to fall for them too after the things they say etc etc.
also the fat shaming was... wow. rhiannon seemed totally cool to do this whole weird relationship thing until suddenly a is in the body of a fat person and she's just like ew no we can't do this because sometimes (like now) you're really unattractive to me lol like shut up rhiannon.
also back to how a ruins lives: he makes decisions that really mess things up for people just to see rhiannon, see: george. see: nathan. etc etc.
and i wish david levithan had told us more about poole, more about what a could do in order to stay in bodies, just because after the whole book it would have been nice to see what he could do to change the daily switching, even if he wasn't going to go for it after all. idk.
overall it was okay though so yeah

What a beautiful and sad story. I really love all the messages this book gives, especially showing that you fall in love with the soul, not the body that the soul inhabits.

I loved the concept of this book! Waking up as a different person everyday? It allowed for there to be so many different characters and personalities. Each person was unique and there was such a wide variety. Sometimes when books/movies/tv shows try to be more diverse it comes off very forced, but the diversity in Every Day seemed so natural. This was a fascinating read.
