Constantine is a bastard, but you can't help but love him.
Some of the stories were more interesting than others, and since I am a spoiled newbie to comics, the style was a bit difficult for me for a while. I certainly wanted to get more exposure to Constantine and the comics, so I guess it got the job done.
As with the early Deadpool issues I read again recently it does feel with this like the best is still to come. It's also pretty difficult with this to get past the bright colouring of it to start with, especially as the storylines themselves are often pretty grim. It's interesting seeing the Dave McKean covers at the end of this volume as they have a much more serious feel. Aside from that though I did enjoy reading this (even with Swamp Thing, who mostly just confuses me, and some unfortunate uses of words like 'erect' which I still laugh at like a 12 year old) and I already like Constantine himself so I'm already looking forward to reading the next volume whenever I can get my hands on it.
I really enjoyed this one. I picked it up after reading Sandman, and I found this equally enjoyable. Social commentary, great art, dashes of horror and the mystical worlds add to the delight. Constantine is an interesting character. You like him, but god is he a jerk.
Highly recommend.

I would describe this volume as good enough to convince me that I should try the second volume. John Constantine is an interesting and complex character. There is some clever writing and the seriousness of everything is a nice from most other comics. The story structure reminds me a lot of Gaiman's The Sandman, with separate stories that have a common thread that (ultimately) ties them all together. However, it took me three attempts to get more than a couple of issues into the volume and there were some boring bits. The artwork is that familiar 80s/90s Vertigo style, which I'm not usually a huge fan of, but I think it works better for Constantine than other old Vertigo series I've read. The artwork also gets cleaner after the first couple of volumes.

This is my first foray into the original John Constantine graphic novels - I've enjoyed some of the New 52 issues and the unfortunately cancelled NBC series starring Matt Ryan. I enjoy the writing style and seeing Constantine come to life on the page. I only wish the color palette matched up more with the tone. I will definitely be continuing these graphic novels.
