A glorious book of poetry and prose! I feel as if I know the deep workings of Mary Oliver's incredible mind, and a thoroughly thoughtful mind it was. She has dived into that deep ocean of shared consciousness and pulled out some beautiful wisdom. I feel that somewhere, deep in my own subconscious, I have been altered.

i'm not sure what to call this: is it a short story collection? a narrative-less memoir? a verbal scrapbook? regardless, it was an enjoyable window into a poet's rich mental life. oliver spends much more time on humanity's relationship with nature and the psychology of the artist instead of love, as in felicity. at times, it was a bit tedious (and even self-aggrandizing), but i appreciated the intent overall!

Mary Oliver's prose, like her poetry, is thoughtful and measured, beautiful without being too flowery. Her short essays in this collection cover topics such as nature, observation, reading and writing poetry, animals, and what it means to live well.
