Still on this Lemire kick. Sad but beautiful. Similar to Roughneck, but I liked this more.

I had a hard time appreciating Lemire's artistic style. All the crooked faces were distracting. And the story was morose. I finished the book feeling sad. I don't enjoy that in a comic book!

I've been a fan of Lemire for awhile. From his self-drawn shorter tales like the Essex Country stories, through his longer self-drawn Vertigo work (Trillium being one of the best comics I've read in recent years), to his superhero stuff (which plays with horror or kung fu movies or noir). and his new ongoing series with Dustin Nguyen on art Descender.

This is up there with my favorite things he's written though. Once again he's able to use a fantastical/horror plot device to explore very real emotions and tell a story about grieving, letting go and reconnecting.

Simple, well drawn, nice story arc. Pretty classic graphic novel.

An interesting Twilight Zone-y read about a soon-to-be-a-father underwater welder (in Tigg's Bay, Nova Scotia) with unresolved daddy issues. The character design takes a little getting used to, but it can be looked past. There are, however, some well-done callbacks and transitions.

Everyone in Jeff Lemire's books look tired. Even the kids, with their long faces and outlines of bags under their eyes. But it works because before you even read a page, you can tell these people have lived.

Jack's wife is about to give birth to their first child and the pressure is on. As an underwater welder, he is no stranger to pressure, but this is nothing like he has ever experienced before. Becoming a father for the first time is making Jack more nervous than he realizes and when he almost dies during a routine dive, he begins to examine his own childhood.

Very quick read, but as always, beautiful artwork on each page that you have to slow down and appreciate.

Side Note: I think I just need to read 'Essex County' and I will be caught upon all of Lemire's original works.

Graphic Novel Book Club March 2016:

Oy. I have a hard time even giving this one 1 Star. I did not like the art and feel like there was almost no story arc as well as no real ending resolution. I totally kept expecting the end to pull the rug out and switch that up but I came out of this one disappointed.
