I love these horrible history books. They are filled with funny/gruesome facts, accompanied by pictures (which are varying between eww and lol). It is a fun way to learn stuff, especially recommended to kids. I am sure even the kids who don't like to learn will love this book, and in the end they will learn something too. :)

I feel like at some points it could be a bit much for younger kids, but I do think it's a very good starting point for young people about The British Empires and it's harms.

Themes: slavery, torture, cannibalism, sacrifice
Suitable for: KS2

Teaching points: India, Africa, America

Horrible Histories is a classic series of books which children adore. I chose to read this one as I was aware of the reach of the British Empire but wanted to know more about the way Britain colonised the lands, with an objective, factual approach rather than the more ‘rose-tinted’ view that many books provide. I was not disappointed. Horrible Histories prides itself on delivering gruesome truth in a manageable way which ensures that children learn what has happened in history, without bias or opinion.

I used to teach Year 4 and we covered the Civil Rights Movement, so I would recommend this book as a background for the teaching of the African slave trade and the influence of Britain at this time.

Though I read this because it was pretty much the only book I had to hand, I loved it. I always like Horrible Histories, they're educational, fun, quick reads. The only problem I had was the fact that Native Americans were continually called Indians, it would have been nice if there was a little context given there, that they were once (very incorrectly called Indians) but we now know this is wrong. Am I asking too much???

I'm thoroughly enjoying rereading these Horrible Histories books that I haven’t read in over a decade! There is plenty of information included that you might not find in more 'traditional' history books.

The cartoons are brilliant and still make me giggle even after all these years and Terry Deary's writing is still as engaging as it was all those years ago.

Even if you're an adult historian you will still enjoy reading these, whether reading them for the first time or rediscovering them!
