Simone de Beauvoir takes common fears of women and just goes OFF. These stories show 3 women unraveling. Past their "youth", they are facing crises that highlight fears of loneliness, aging, abandonment, emptiness that (I imagine) are rather common as women get older. I can see how this may be a controversial work of feminist literature; there are no heroines here but it is so real and the insight displayed in these stories is incredible.
