So, this book is a trigger for every tiny bit of existential dread that my anxiety ridden soul has. But the plot and politics of it all will absolutely suck you in if you can get past the rampant death. I may eventually try to read the rest of the series. Just maybe not super soon…

I typically find most YA books to have bland or outright bad writing, caricature characters, and generic plotlines. That was not the case with this book. It is immensely readable, contains a great cast, and a unique premise. Also, the covers for these books are awesome. This book is pretty dark, which is a bonus for me but perhaps a bit shocking for being YA. About the worst thing you can say about this book is, while I enjoyed the characters, they all tend to fall pretty squarely into "good" or "bad" classifications. Definitely recommended.

I tandem read this book by following a paper copy along with the audio. This was a great and exciting read for me, especially since it’s been so long since I’ve read a YA/fantasy type book. I agree with some other reviewers that this book was as exciting as the hunger games, which I read quite sometime ago. I would definitely read more from this author and feel like this book has re-introduced me to YA/Fantasy which I have not read for many many years. The definitely was entertaining with imaginary storylines that I myself probably could never have dreamed up.

I had a good time with this one! It was easy to get through, and I gobbled it up like a little treat. The world and the setup was a hook all its own. I was pretty taken aback by how ballsy Citra and Rowan were (good thing they’re both low key the best to ever do it), and some of the twists got me! Especially toward the end.. I think it’s set up for an interesting continuation!

Sometimes the book felt a little shallow and cliche, and I can’t tell if it actually IS those those things, or if it only feels like it because I’m reading YA as a 28-year-old
