“Coraline discovered that the world is not always what it seems.”

^ That quote basically describes the entire book! Nothing is never truly as it seems. If things seem too perfect, odds are the truth is hidden somewhere in the shadows.

Sometimes you'll never realize how great your life is, until everything you know is ripped away from you.

I don't understand what the fuss is all about. I honestly hated this book.

When the movie came out, I did not realize it was a book. If I had known at the time, I know I would have gone looking for the book first and then maybe my love for Neil Gaiman would have flourished years ago rather than earlier this year when I read The Ocean at the End of the Lane, followed by the Graveyard Book and Neverwhere. In general, Neil's writing style is so unique and captivating it's hard for me not to love.

A theme I really enjoy in his books is that the kids are full of imagination and wonder, while the adults are relatively uninterested by anything that goes beyond their norm. Coraline, that just wants to go outside, have adventures and have hang out with her parents is met with "go watch TV, play with toys, go bother some other adult". Which to me begs the question of whose fault is it exactly when kids don't want to go outside. What's the point if no one else will come play with you? Also that the adults constantly don't take any of the children seriously.

Not to mention a shout out to the kids that have names that people refuse to pronounce correctly, no matter how many times you tell them! The audiobook was quite eerie actually in a few spots, especially when the damn mice started singing.... This is definitely a book I would give to a kid that looooves Halloween out of all the holiday. It's spooky, it's full of everything kids dream of (finding a secret world in your house) but also with a few life lessons of you can't always get what you want and if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Really this would have been right up my alley since even as a kid I was all about the strange and unusually. Opportunity missed!
Also, the depiction of the cat in the book is absolutely spot on with how I imagine cats think.
