I was quite enjoying this story of families broken, families trying to build again. The author does well depicting how things are and are not passed down generations.
At some point though it became muddled. I didn't think much of the "twist" ending, but as it's been mentioned, does leave room open to a sequel. I could not figure out, after all she'd been through, how frantically the mother seemed to want that child back in her life.
Writing a letter seemed to work as a plot device, but what would it mean to the recipient? Not much once we've seen these characters revealed for who they are.
What really stunned me was the husband's revelation that he couldn't stop laughing about. About his daughter. And that made me feel like he was the actual monster, leaving his wife vulnerable and choosing their child before her as his partner. We all know and see these families, too; the parents consumed with their children and not as much their spouses. All these possibilities surround us. Some parents-to-be think they know how they'll be as a parent. But things don't always work out that way.
We all know and see how different parents react to the birth of a child. Society keeps the stereotypes in place that a woman's highest calling is to be a mother. But so many variations make up the reality.
Marin Ireland is a fabulous narrator. MTC

The Push was disturbingly interesting. The author made the main characters relatable in their awfulness and realistic in their complexity. The author also did a great job of making the reader take turns, loving and hating the same character at different points in the story. I found the ending very unsatisfying. I’m curious what others think.
This book will leave you thinking "WTF did just read"!

I think I should realize by now that I don't enjoy reading about kids being brats and doing evil, that's on me. But I think this is still a worthy book to read about motherhood and the expectations society put on women.
