I am tearing up over here. Wow this hit home. I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed with how much my own life was interwoven into this story and it’s really beautiful seeing comparisons in life experiences, fiction or not, because then we have visual proof we are not alone.

wow. solid 5 stars, and deservingly so. going into this book as a person who isn't big on poetry, i was hooked almost immediately. xiomara's poems depicted her emotions and thoughts in their rawest state, which, in my opinion, separated this book from many others depicting the ups and downs of teenage life. additionally, xiomara's interactions with ms. galiano were especially meaningful (xiomara's english assignments, the poetry club), even though they were much rarer than interactions between xiomara and other characters. maybe i just like seeing people besides a kid's family and friends actually caring about and looking out for a kid when they have no real obligation to. anyway, the character development of xiomara and xavier's father was also a little thing i appreciated. lastly, i loved that i felt like not everything was resolved at the end of the book, because real life is pretty messy. and often, tensions aren't always healed completely. but as a family and as individuals, the batista family grew. this book was done very well, and the themes of self-acceptance were incorporated perfectly and not overdone. there's a lot of other tidbits (and not so small bits) that i took away from this read (but i'll save you from reading any more, if anyone ever reads this), and i highly, highly, highly recommend it.

as a side note: i finished 'the poet x' in two sittings. i have not finished a book in two sittings in at least four years. please read this book.

One of the few novels but I hope not the last where I felt seen. It centers around Xiomara and her growing up in New York as an Afro Latina who doesn’t feel completely in control when she has a religious mother who seems to be overly concerned with a lot more than a typical non immigrant mother should be. A lot of people don’t fully understand the feeling of being trapped when you are a teenager growing up in a household where both your parents left their home country to give their kids a better life. They tend to assume it can’t be that bad yet more than half the time, these same parents have religion used as a tool for suppression to their offspring. Xiomara understands that her and her mother will not be best friends but this is where poetry comes to life in the form of her notebook and the encouragement of one of her teachers. Heart strings tugged on me the whole entire time and this is one I will cherish forever.

The Poet X is a beautiful collection of poetry (with some dialogue) written by our readers character Xiomara who navigates life with a strict Christian family as a high schooler. We follow Xiomara when she is 15 turning 16 and learning more about herself and the power of written word.
Acevedo did a wonderful job of portraying a teenager navigating her life, understanding more about the world (both the good and the bad), and displaying acts of rebellion that her strict Mami has rules for. I really enjoyed this book, and it was a very quick read. It does hit on some sensitive topics, but ones that are very real for some people in modern day. Several poems really stood out to me, and there was a few times I got goosebumps.
I think this is a beautiful piece of art with an impactful message.
