I really enjoyed this book! I've read some poetic fiction before and enjoyed the format. In this case, the format really added to the book - Xiomara is a poet expressing her inner thoughts through poetry. The "teenage" topics were dealt with in a realistic and nonexploitative way. I also appreciated that the ending also wasn't wrapped up in a neat bow, instead it emphasized that relationships need continual work.

Read for MLIS elective

Powerful and I love that it's in verse! Not sure how I feel about the ending and resolution (and the lack of development with certain characters). It was incomplete and half-assed; it could have been better imo.

As always, this is one of my favorite books. Elizabeth Acevedo is an amazing poet and reader, and this audiobook is literally fantastic.

An incredible read. I don’t typically love poetry style writing, but this was easy to read even for non-poets, and the story was amazing. It’s a relatively quick read, highly recommend.

Xiomara has a loud voice that people won't hear, and a body that takes too much room for others' comfort. She is a bubbling mess of emotions, torn between a religious mother, her Dominican heritage, and the words that keep blossoming under her pen and defying what she's been taught all her life. This book is her journal, in verse, brimming with restricted power. Elizabeth Acevedo offers a raw insight into a high school girl's life that reads like a defiant shout. It's an immensely powerful read, with its cut lines tumbling down the pages. I'm impressed by the author, and also by the translator, who also writes novels in verse and has wonderfully done justice to Acevedo's bright prose.
