Alice Oseman is great and her books are so easy to fly through but this was weird and angsty and I wasn’t a super big fan of the characters. Highlight was Nick and Charlie - I really want to read Heartstopper now!
I started and I loved it, especially the characters and their mindsets. You don’t even want to know how many passages I copied into my notebook. Then the story developed and everything got a lot more confusing and depressing…
I think the best thing about this book are the characters. They are unique, tell an interesting, often confusing, but realistic story and make you think a lot. Huge praise to Alice for creating this universe with all his wonderful souls.
One thing I was a bit disappointed with, was the ending. It overly confused me and was overdramatic, at least from my point of view. To be honest: the whole plot twist was kinda confusing and made no sense, BUT I don’t think that it’s the book’s essence, so I could simply overlook it. This book is about thoughts - the good ones, but primarily the bad ones, the depressing, ironic ones.
What really surprised and shocked me was the realisation how close to jumping, how close to giving up Tori actually was.
For everyone who wants to read this book after reading/watching Heartstopper: be prepared, for me it was a shock to see this beautiful bubble I had created crumble into pieces.
And advice for anyone before starting it:
Read the triggers, because it not only has triggers but it really DOES trigger and can get quite overwhelming.
A little edit from my older, hopefully also wiser, self:
It’s entirely written from Tori’s pov and she is an unreliable narrator. That’s the reason why everything is confusing and you don’t really realise how close to jumping she was. You’re her.
