Fun book for kids if they’re heavy modern fantasy readers

This book was a lot of fun. Unique and yet, for anyone who grew up with their nose in a book, exactly what a reader always secretly wishes would happen...jumping, literally, into the story. A great middle grade read.

I really wanted to love this book. I really did. It's got tons of literary references, spunky protagonists, and the plot had so much potential. But as I got about halfway through the book I found myself struggling to continue reading. I don't really know what it was about the story, but it just dragged. When I found this series, I was super excited about them, but now I doubt that I will read the next two.

This book was a struggle. My main problem wasn't the writing or even the plot (which could use some work), it was the characters. The characters were so basic and shallow. Owen the worst for me though. He would do things without even thinking the effects this might have on other people. Bethany was a flipper to. One minute she's made at Owen the next she wants to see if he's sorry and always wants to have people agree with her. The plot was very basic and nothing that amazing really happened for me. Also I expected from the synopsis of the book that Owen and Bethany would go on their journeys together. In truth Owen and Bethany only were together only about 1/5 of the book. My rating is 2.8 stars. Not quite an okay read but I wasn't in pain reading it.

I like the idea of this book, but Owen was so annoying. I just wanted to smack him.
