Some really interesting and useful information in this book! I appreciate how she breaks down the pros and cons of medication for alcoholism, the pain/pleasure homeostasis, and the various case studies she included. I felt like she didn’t have to focus so much on the guy addicted to masturbation, it was a bit much. My main issue with this book is the judgmental way the author discusses cannabis use, as if it can’t be used in a positive, recreational manner. I noticed a judgey tone at different points in the book, and that bothered me. I also thought it was odd how she didn’t address the issue of stalking with the man who stalked that woman and ended up with charges?? She just brushed past it! Otherwise it was an interesting read. Definitely not the end all be all book on addiction, but a good starting point for those like me who haven’t read much on the topic.

If you’re thinking about/flirting with the idea of reevaluating some habits in your life, check this book out. It is not at ALL what I expected (and I honestly think it was misadvertised), but I don’t think I would have picked it up if I had known what was really in it. Whether it’s a bad relationship, drugs and alcohol, sex, screen time, overeating…this book really encouraged me to sit with myself (in a totally nonjudgemental way) and think about how I feel about some of the patterns in my life and if they’re really serving me. It’s honestly not that ‘science’ heavy and relies mostly on personal experiences, but in terms of the impact it had on me, I found it effective.
I really didn't like the portrait of her immigrant clients (one above all, the client from Eastern Europe) and didn't feel comfortable reading so many details from people's private lives. A lot of personal details from her patients were completely useless, gratuitous and inappropriate. The book itself makes some interesting points but in a quite confusing manner. Don't know what to think of it.
