Motivating & Easy to Understand

Dixon's book is written in language friendly to the constantly-addled brain of the writer, and the use of frequent GMC charts helps keep the focus where it belongs.

Good no-frills reminder on what drives a story and why what you're writing might have nice, well written scenes that no one gives a damn about.

This is a simple, short how-to book on writing fiction. Simple, short: those are virtues in this case.

I had noticed some complaints in my rejections: "...but why is your character doing that?" I had the goal and the conflict figured out; what I was missing was motivation.

I got this book recommendation at a writer's conference, and it proved to be a timely tip. Increasingly, I find how-to books on writing redundant with the many I've read before. This one filled one of the remaining gaps in my craft, and didn't waste my time doing it. Kudos.

If you struggling with clearly defining what your character's GMC then this book is for you. This book is actually brilliant they way it breaks it down and I think I have a much better grasp on this aspect of writing. Also I loved that Debra just uses the plot devices from The Wizard of OZ to break down GMC for you. This is the type of book you will go back to over and over again until you master this.

It has really helped me create an outline for my fiction writing. There's nothing in here that I didn't already know, but for some reason, seeing it written down, seeing the process of outlining and creating characters from scratch really helped me. It's August, and I've already begun working on my outline for November's nanowrimo.

Brilliant craft book for both new and experienced writers.

This book has been on my TBR list for years. I read the complete book within just a few hours of purchase. It is straightforward, practical, and filled with easy-to-understand examples. I love that the book uses movies most of us are familiar with in order to demonstrate the importance of a strong goal, motivation, and conflict. I highly recommend this book.
