Good book with a fun main character and entertaining story. Really cool idea for a magic system.

The book lost points because of the numerous moments the main character will simply know something because of his past which the reader learns about in that exact moment. Also lost some points for how infuriating the “romance” segments.

Excited to read the second one.

He’s great with descriptions of scenes and for a while the book was good until Kvothe began to attend school. Why did he have to describe a woman’s private parts as the “mouth of hell”? Every woman in this book (and they are very sparse) exist for the benefit of men.

The main character is also very irritating after a while. He’s the Smartest, Strongest, Bravest man. He’s so smart he finished learning in a quarter of the time everyone else did. He’s so brave he took down a dragon no one else could. He’s so “not like the other guys” the love interest only has eyes for him even while she literally dated everyone but him. He’s so brave he stands up against the rich bully all the time.

I would recommend this book to people as a passive aggressive insult to them.

Writing was good at times, the setup
with the killer spiders
never came back. Also reminded me of all the suffering that I didn't like about Red Rising.
And I swear Kvothe and Bast had boyfriend vibes but that went nowhere

The author has some amazing writing chops but dear gods is this book almost impossibly slow. And I think about 120 pages too long.

I think it’s more this a HUGE character focused story with very little overall plot. You’re mostly there to read about this eventual hero and his every day life. Which for my ADHD brain is like being forced to sit through an eternity of match lectures.

My biggest issue is that Denna and Kvothe are the biggest “special specials” I’ve read in a long time and it’s so dull. That being said, I chalk Kvothe’s arrogance and completely unrealistic genius to being a bard. Because that is what he is, and I actually kinda liked that. But Denna had no excuse to be so boring for being the main love interest.

Buttttt there are a handful of really great, really immersive scenes. So it’s probably more down to writing style preferences than story.

complaints about a lack of any real development of side characters (esp women) are valid, but i didn’t care much in a story easily carried by its mc. beautiful prose and a masterclass in immersive fantasy .. can’t help loving when a protag rlly is just Smarter Than Everyone
