Spain in 1944, young Ofelia is confronted with heaps of change: the loss of her father, moving into an isolated home, a sibling on the way and a cruel step father who is part of the Francoist regime. But there is some hope. Following a tiny fairy-like creature she meets a Faun, who puts three tasks before her. If she can fulfill them, she might be the long lost princess Moanna of the underworld.
This is a fable and was adapted from Toro’s movie by Cornelia Funke. The illustrations are by Allen Williams. It is told with little fairy tales paralleling the main story.
This book was way creepier than I thought. I guess I am a scaredy-cat, since it is recommended for children aged 14 and older. It is not really my cup of tea, though. It has less fantasy aspects and a bigger emphasis on the - for me - side plot about her step-father than I expected. But overall I liked reading it, especially with Halloween approaching.
3 of 5 ⭐️ for me
_____
