I gave Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth a 4 Star Rating.

This book came highly recommended to me and having read Roth's previous work I knew I had to at least give it a go. I enjoyed a lot of things about this book but there were a couple of things I found not as great.

The first thing I found that I didn't enjoy about this book was the name bombarding at the beginning. We are very quickly introduced to 5 or so characters (two of which are the parents but were referred as their names and not Mum / Dad) and I found it did take me a long time to work out who was who in relation to one of our main Characters, Akos. Even when he was taken, I still found it hard to understand what was going on. However, once into Crya's POV things became a lot easier to understand.
The only thing I found I didn't enjoy with the book was sometimes becoming lost with what was going on, especially when the Renegades became a huge part of the plot. I sometimes felt we were being told un-necessary descriptions of what certain characters were doing.

As a whole, I really enjoyed CTM. The relationship between Akos and Cyra was slow burning, gentle and really fruitful. The book went at a pretty steady pace which meant I didn't feel rushed or like I needed to catch up. The plot was jam-packed with action and there were times when I couldn't read fast enough to see what was going to happen next!

The world building was one thing I loved the most. Each planet and area was completely different from each other and I can only hope that Roth takes us further into different planets and areas to explore more of our world!

Took me a good while to get into this one, but I got there eventually. At first the different planets and solar system and everything took me out of the story but once I got used to them and all the terms I was able to immerse myself in the story of the characters. Aside from the fact that it gave me weird dreams about my husband having a currentgift where he could feel all my feelings extra strong and he couldn't handle it (!) this was a good read. Looking forward to the sequel.

I listened to this book for one specific reason.😅 It was alright, might try the sequel one day.

I found this book very hard to get into at first, I described it to my colleague as "very sci-fi" with unusual names and ice planets and hover vehicles but I persevered and managed to get past those things and find the story. I found myself rooting for Akos & Cyra and wondering if one of them would die - the last time Ms Roth wrote a book from two peoples perspective one of them certainly did die. The end was a little abrupt but I can see there is still some mileage in the story so I will most likely read the next one and I thank my Good Reads news letter for alerting me to this one and the very efficient Dudley Library system for letting me get a hold of it quickly.

I enjoyed the basic storyline of this, but I acknowledge that some aspects are problematic. Cyra is a great character, as is the Chancellor, and I'd like to read more about them.

Why was this book missing all the action? Even the action scenes were dull and didn't pull me in. I was tempted to DNF this book several times, but forced myself to finish. I will not be continuing on with the next book in the series. The romance also felt forced, there was no real attraction or chemistry between the two main characters. I did not care for a single person. The book seemed interesting based on the planet system, and the magic "current" system. But it was not written well enough to entertain a reader.

Fantastic story that I couldn't put down. I absolutely loved this book. A lot of death, but it made it more real somehow. Tangible. I am going to start the second book right now!

The good and bad things about this book kind of cancelled each other out & left me feeling somewhat neutral.
