Magician

Raymond E. Feist

4.1 AVERAGE

I first read this book in my twenties while attempting to read my way through my local library, devouring all the Fantasy I could get. It was also during this time that I discovered that I really enjoy "the chosen one" trope - but, of course, I had no idea about tropes back then.

Listening to it now, on audio, just brought every word back to me, vividly...

Magician follows the story of two boys, Pug and Tomas, apprenticed to the court magician and the castle guard respectively, when their world is invaded by aliens. During the battles that ensue the boys get separated - Tomas gets lost in a cave while Pug gets taken by the enemy - thus placing their feet on the path of a journey that will cross space and time.

Between these pages, you will discover:

- Gorgeous medieval settings,
- Adventure,
- Dragons,
- Incredible characters,
- Fascinating civilizations,
- Epic magic,
- Elves, and Dwarves, and Goblins, oh my,

This SFF is perfect for fans of Goodkind, Brooks, Tolkien, etc. as well as for anyone looking for a good fantasy; I highly recommend it.

My rating for this book constantly fluctuated as I was reading it The opening few chapters completely engrossed me. I loved exploring Feist's world through Pug's eyes. The world felt a little familiar to ones I had ready before but i was still enjoying the richness of it. Only when the characters set off on a royal quest did the story becoming a little too familiar and less imaginative. It started to drag from that point in and when multiple view points were introduced I began to feel even more disconnected to the characters and their goals. There were some great moments and great characters overall but I don't think I'll be continuing with this series.

A classic. With all the shortcomings and mistakes, it's still a wonderful book.

DID NOT FINISH: 73%

I really wanted to finish this book but it became such a struggle to get through.

The women are at best two dimensional cardboard cutouts, who seem to exist solely in connection with men. Their power or strength, if any, comes from men. Their character development comes from men. They have no agency or truly interesting characteristics, and none of them do anything (independently of men) to advance the plot or impact their world in any meaningful way.

The characters are not diverse. The main characters are all men. The cool characters? All men. The characters who are actually influencing things? Men. I suppose if the reader themselves is a man, this issue may not be so discernible, but I struggle to see how anyone could review this work and say the characters are 'diverse'.

The plot follows the perspective of multiple characters. Some of these characters appear to be walking talking violations of Chekov's gun. I proceeded through chapter after chapter, reading about their actions, waiting for the moment where the plot would crystallise and I'd appreciate just what exactly it was all for. It never came. It might be in the last 25% of the book but I guess I'll never know.

DNF.

Looking forward to interesting discussions at book club about this book, but I can see why it was broken into two parts to market to the American market as it was too long for me and I couldn't finish it.

This was the first epic fantasy book I ever read, back when I was in my early teens, so I will always have a soft spot for it. I remember being totally entranced by it, and it remains one of my favourite books.

Ok, so it completely fails the Bechdel test, as there are so few women in it (4 who speak and 2 who have glancing mentions), but even so, it spans two worlds, has love, swords, Pirates, magicians, elves, dwarves and a dragon. What's not to like?!

Fantastic story. I can't wait to start reading Silverthorn!
