I had no expectations that this book would be able to live up to its predecessor, [b:The Sparrow|334176|The Sparrow|Mary Doria Russell|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1230829367s/334176.jpg|3349153], and I'm glad, because I don't think it did. It was, however, still a wonderful continuation (and ending) to the story. We see minor characters from the first novel fleshed out more fully, and engaging new ones showing up at all points throughout the story. I don't think I realized until after I had finished the book how necessary this sequel was, and how many questions I had actually had before reading it.

sequel to the sparrow. worth reading to finish the plot, but still kinda lacks. I think the biggest thing for me is that it is not emotionally engaging. like, the plot has the potential to be soul shattering, but it just isn't. reading the 3 body problem right now and it takes my breath away in comparison.

I definitely liked this book better than the last time I tried to read it. (I actually finished it this time!) But I guess it was too neat of an ending. I think the end of the Sparrow was an awesome end of the series. It was much more realistic.

AUDIOBOOK:
Another issue I had was the person who read the audiobook, Anna Fields. ALL her men sounded the same: like the serial killer from Silence of the Lambs, and her accents were horrendous! Also, I wanted to slap her annoying children (who also all sounded the same.) She was definitely good at reading a story, but keep her to a story with fewer characters, and less dialogue.

SPOILERS:
One of the issues I had was the alien version of the white man fixing everything. They come in, and help solve all the politics of the world. All the evil meat eaters are either killed off, or agree to stop eating Runa. PROBLEM FIXED! Liked alien culture, but it was a bit too similar to earth culture to be believable. Also, the two main Jana'ata killing each other was a bit weak and kind of a let down.

But Russell is really good at character, and that was the book's saving grace. Her interactions between the humans was the most compelling aspect of this book.

Now on to read Epitaph!

The way I described my feelings about both of these books to someone was that I wasn’t totally sure if I liked the story, but I love the writing and the characters. I find myself reflecting on the themes and issues of the books- they stay with me. Probably not for everyone, but I found them to be worth my while and would definitely reread.

In a follow-up to the Sparrow, her excellent science fiction novel of Jesuits exploring a new world, Russel continues to explore the consequences of interacting with new “species? both socially and religiously. Excellent.
