Would have been a five star book if it wasn’t for the ending. The ending was a big disappointment

loved the concept, but the ending fell flat (boo pregnancy tropes), overall interesting story about the power of womanhood

I cannot speak highly enough of this book. It was part dystopian/lord of the flies, part tragic romance, and part horror/thriller. It all comes together in the end with plot twist after plot twist I was on the edge of my seat!!! It really spoke to womanhood and feminism in a way I haven’t ever seen in a book. It was so inspiring and heartbreaking and uplifting all at once. But how tf is this YA bc some of it was GRAPHIC. anyway get ur hands on this asap.

The Grace Year was not initially a five star read but ended up that way the longer I listened to it. I got it as a chirp deal and had heard good things previously. These things were absolutely correct in their assessment of the book.

The Grace Year is a year in every girl's life that is not talked about. In their sixteenth year all the girls of Garner County are sent out into the wilderness to release the magic they hold in their veins. The magic that lure men to their beds, the magic that drives women mad with jealousy. It is this magic they must get rid of, for at the end of the Grace Year the girls return. Without magic, thus purified and ready for marriage. But Tierney dreams of a better life, one where the grace year doesn't exist. Because the magic isn't real....or is it?

We follow Tierney as she struggles to get the other girls to see reason while under the constant threat of poachers in the woods. Who will kill them and use their corpses as payment for a better life on the black market. But Tierney quickly finds out that maybe the men outside are not the biggest threat. It's each other.

This book hit all the right notes and echoed our own twisted views of women and society and our rolls in it. It delves deep into the complex nature of men and how they do not see women as people, but as objects to be shaped and molded into what they want. At the cost of our magic. It's dark and twisted in some of the best ways and horrifying in others. I loved every minute of it once it got going. It really makes you question our own thoughts on society and the snippet at the end of this audiobook where Kim Liggett talks about the inspiration for The Grace Year was a wonderful touch.
