This book is ostensibly about birding, but I think it's actually more about making an intentional effort to pay attention. Or about how our hobbies often provide a way out and/or through the more troubling and stressful parts of life. Or it's about slowing down and taking a reprieve from the fast-paced. It's definitely about birds. Anyhow, I really liked it. It was a peaceful read, and I feel like it came at a good time for me. I'm definitely considering going outside and listening to the birds.

A quiet, short book about slowing down and appreciating beauty. Perfect for any time of year, but really helped me get into the beginning of spring.

I read the version with the blue cloudy cover and multiple birds, with the tagline "The Art of Noticing the Insignificant"... A version which seems to be represented nowhere but on Amazon for some ungodly reason. So i leave my review here.

Short and simply, I picked it up thinking I'd get something closer to [b:The Art of Noticing|41552704|The Art of Noticing 131 Ways to Spark Creativity, Find Inspiration, and Discover Joy in the Everyday|Rob Walker|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1543132990l/41552704._SX50_.jpg|64830283] or [b:On Looking|15803166|On Looking Eleven Walks with Expert Eyes|Alexandra Horowitz|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1354847308l/15803166._SY75_.jpg|21526580]. Instead, the book's a memoire more in line with [b:Hiking My Feelings|48916486|Hiking My Feelings Stepping into the Healing Power of Nature|Sydney Williams|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1574466117l/48916486._SX50_.jpg|74312930].

Certainly, it's well written and the author has a way with words. But just as with HMF, the title was misleading; it simply wasn't what I was looking for.

A beautiful meditation on the relationship between nature, looking, stillness and creativity.

“If you listen to birds, every day will have a song in it.”

The books that end up on my list of favorite reads are often the ones that I can’t get through without writing down quote after quote that impacted me. I read several passages over again, savoring her words.

I am certainly the target audience for this book: bird lover/observer, writer, occasional artist, and someone who loves to ponder life.

A favorite section was her meditation on being a book lover. I also enjoyed reading about different people’s connections with birds, including Emily Dickenson and Da Vinci. Overall, it is a lovely little book about daily life.

I assumed Kyo Maclear was either interested in learning about ornithology, the study of birds, or would take up bird photography when she accompanied a musician/photographer Jack Breakfast (David Bell) for a year of bird watching in Toronto. But in fact, many life lessons were shared with readers, including chapters on smallness, waiting, roaming and regrets.
