Rating: 2.2

I rarely rate books so low that I actually finish, but I read this for a bookclub and by dear god this book is so boring.

I felt like the war was just a back-drop for this family, the Gregorys. I didn't care for the most part. A couple of characters die in this book, and I felt nothing. I am very emotional and I get attached easily, but these characters felt so hollow.

I wish the book was as interesting as it was in the beginning, but the more I read the more I didn't want to finish reading.

I hated William, Gerald was an interesting character, but I wished it centered more on him. I felt like Spence-Ash gave William too much, wanted to make you like him(spoiler alert I hated it)

One of the biggest issue I took with this, was it just didn't seem like the war effected the people in the book. They didn't talk too much about what the war took from the people and what this created among them. Millie sometimes had something to say about that, but I didn't feel like it went far enough.

Another issue I have is nothing happens. It just felt like I was looking into the lives of the most bland people existing.

I wish we saw more of Gerald working with civil rights.

Anyway, I did not enjoy this, and I want my time back ;;

This book was definitely more character driven than plot driven which is fine. What I couldn’t stand was all of the dialogue was in italics instead of quotes and I found it hard to keep track of who was talking. But there were a few chapters when it was in quotes so it confused me

A coming-of-age story about a girl who grows up split between two families, and how they navigate relationships between each other following separation, loss, and new beginnings. A quick read perfect for a Maine weekend getaway.

4.5/5 stars. Not my usual mystery novel, but this book was so wonderfully written. A little slow and then also fast at the same time? A beautiful story.
