Someone once told me that growing up feeling loved allows you to go on to love other people. Maybe love is simply a huge chain letter, passed down through the generations. The details of the stories begin not to matter.

This is a good example of a feel-good book, it worked perfectly for me, even throughout the sad parts I had a smile on my face.

I must admit I started reading it with low expectations as I didn't enjoy the previous book from the author This time next year which just wasn't for me, didn't feel the story at all. But this one was just what I needed.

Although I did guess the love matches and romantic choices throughout the book, it didn't bother me, I was actually happy that things were going as I was hoping they would. It has a really sweet main story and a secondary one just as interesting; destiny wants to play a major role in this story.

As for the characters, they were lovely; some close to perfect, some more complicated but in the end a nice mix to help fell in love with the story.

When tigers have something to say, do they work on a draft? Do they litter their message with niceties: “yours sincerely,” “thank you,” “please”? No. They do not. Women constantly undermine themselves with qualifying phrases like, “Sorry,” “I’m no expert but . . .” “I just wanted to check,” “I might have an idea.” Change the words you use, and you will change the way you are seen: I am not sorry, I am an expert, and I’m certainly not “yours,” sincerely or otherwise.

Lowkey planning a trip to Jersey in my head.

We love character development!!

I’ve seen myself in Laura’s shoes, wanting that perfect happy ever after. I’ve questioned if I read too many romance novels and if my expectations are too high.

I love the way Laura got to have a dose of reality while also learning the truth about her family. I don’t think love is perfect, and it doesn’t cover all mishaps. I love the way Sophie wrote Laura and her progress as a human. It’s so refreshing to see a love story that isn’t complete perfection and cliche.

I’ve never even heard of Jersey (ignorant American here), but I want to go explore it now! It sounds beautiful.

a fellow lover of tchotchkes

I’ve been waiting patiently for this book to show up at my library after loving THIS TIME NEXT YEAR and JUST HAVEN’T MET YOU YET did not disappoint. The book follows Laura Le Quesne, an almost thirty-year-old writer from London who interviews couples about how they met. Because of her job and the epic love stories she’s heard about her own grandparents and parents, Laura is a romantic, one with a checklist of all the things she’s looking for in her perfect man. And when an assignment sends her to Jersey, the place where her parents fell in love after her mother serendipitously found half a coin belonging to Laura’s great-grandmother, she finds herself in the position to possibly fall in love with a man who checks off all the boxes on her perfect partner checklist.

The writing is absolutely beautiful (I could picture so many of the locations in Jersey, but especially the picture of Ted with jewelry decorating his beard!) and the characters were so complex and likeable. I can’t wait to read more from Sophie Cousens.
