Read during a science fiction and fantasy course in the 1980s. First was required reading, finished the trilogy for fun.

Really loved these three first books, even though it took me another year to start the last one. The first book was one of the most pleasurable readings ever, I was really captivated by the arabic and islamic influence it had on the story. I also loved the second and third book, although I think the last one suffered a bit from having two irritating toddlers as protagonists eheh.

I can see why it’s become this whole other entity apart from “the book”. It has everything a fantasy reader could want, the world, the glossary, the history.
Frank Herbert is a genius.
The freemen have my heart honestly. Such a wild, rugged existence, rituals, rites of passage and way of life.

After reading the first 3 books in the series, I need to say is that Frank Herbert was a genius, and I don't mean this just because of the plot or the writing quality, but because of the absurd amount of detail put into world building, character interaction and most of all the philosophical themes present throughout the books. This series made me feel small while reading it, as it explained the intricacies of politics, religion and human nature and it opened my eyes a bit when it comes to some aspects of humankind. The action scenes are well written, the dialogue is incredible and the plots are unpredictable and tie together nicely.
There are however some things that didn't sit very well with me and among these is the fact that each book seems to leave room for a continuation at the end, but when this comes you are left disappointed as it seems that characters change drastically with no apparent reason, that new plots arise out of thin air and finally that some things which are easy to understand at their core, get overly complicated sometimes. This changes as you progress through the sequels but it still feel a bit immersion-breaking to me.
In conclusion, I think this is an amazing series, even though it has it's ups and downs. Sometimes the pacing seems a bit slow but if you offer it a bit of patience I think you'll definitely find this series worth reading.
