This is the fifth book in the Alex Rider series. Alex has traveled to Venice to find Scorpia and learn the truth about his father. He is told his father was an assassin and Scorpia wants to recruit him to carry on his father's legacy. But does Alex have what it takes to be a killer? Is everything Scorpia has told him true? Alex risks his life to find the truth about his father and himself. Another great action packed installment.
Anthony Horowitz keeps us on our toes again. Alex goes over to the dark side briefly. He learns the truth about his father. And this story ends on a real tease of a cliff-hanger.
This is my second time reading Scorpia as part of my Alex Rider series reread, ready for publication of Nightshade. I have chosen to read these in audiobook format as they are brilliantly narrated by Oliver Chris and very immersive with the use of sound effects.
This one is, along with Point Blanc, probably my favourite. It answers many questions from earlier books and asks plenty more for those that follow. Scorpia looks more at Alex’s childhood and private life than any ever, one of the most interesting parts of any spy story in my opinion.
And that cliffhanger though!
This is my first completed book of 2020. 1/75

So Alex goes to Venice in search of information about his father and drags unwitting teacher and schoolfriend into the fringes of his world. When he gets told a convincing tale of the past his anger takes him over to the dark side (or is it?). I know some other people who have read this book don't think this is credible, but I think it is of a piece with Alex' age, his lack of a father and the feeling that he has been betrayed and let down in the past by MI6 - in other words the ground has been prepared in the previous books so maybe those readers were ones taking this as a stand alone. Who knows. Anyway, more dastardly plots, improbable escapes from near-death experiences and twists and turns meant it was rather difficult to put this down.
Definitely a little slow to get started, but considering I’m not this book’s target audience (I’m a 15 year old girl haha) it is a lot better than I expected it was going to be when I decided to reread this series.
I did also stay up all night to read this book as it really is quite a thrilling read!

Another great book in this series. There's several huge plot twists and it's gripping with every twist and turn in the narrative. Great writing and plot as Alex discovers the truth about his parents deaths and the where his true allegiance should lie.
Have to say this is my favourite book of the series, great character development!
