I didn’t dislike it but I also wouldn’t recommend it. Rollercoaster of emotions and not in a good way. I went from being intrigued, I don’t get it, okay here we go, and wtf was that.

I didn’t feel the “I would do anything for my sister” connection which is probably why I didn’t buy into it. I loved the concept but not the story.

I do love the way she describes the flavors of emotions. The twists were great too

Orphan Saoirse is a siren, a member of a dangerous and hated species that is supposed to be extinct. She spends her life hiding in plain sight, graduating from a preeminent training academy at the top of her class.

Directly after, she is courted by the royal family to be a member of crown prince Hayes's royal guard but rejects the offer.

Beneath an extortion threat, however, Saoirse is forced to swallow her pride and revisit the king's offer. In this way she can gain information to protect her adopted younger sister, Rain.

In the palace, Saoirse learns the king's darkest secrets and her country's unimaginable past that only reinforces her reasons for loathing the royals.

The longer Saoirse stays in the palace, the more she falls beneath Prince Hayes' charm, the riskier her situation, for the prince will have her killed in a heartbeat if he discovers what she is.

This was a decent YA fantasy with an interesting magic system and high stakes. The story, however, was repetitive and slow and though there was a cliffhanger, I'm not curious or emotionally invested enough to want to read it.

avocadoisland's review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH: 30%

Dnf at 30%, couldn’t get into it
Also got really annoyed that the MC kept calling the prince ”Sir”. Which is a disrespectful honorific to use for a prince and it didn’t feel intentional which I would have found funny if any of the characters actually reacted to it.
Also the MC being 17 and seducing men to their deaths is a little weird, could have been aged up a little.
