Okay since several people in the reviews seem to think that the sister dating a girl came out of nowhere... honestly don't understand. That relationship was TELEGRAPHED from the literal moment those two characters laid eyes on each other. I knew it immediately. Absolutely not shoehorned or surprise, just something you get to enjoy knowing while the narrator hasn't figured it out yet; and I think it adds a nice layer to the themes of identity and family and family-struggling-to-see-each-other-clearly.

An interesting story- but will be a hard sell with my students. There's not enough fantasy to intrigue those who want a mystical story but may be too out there for students who are into realistic.
Lily, her sister Sam, and their mom move to take care of their grandmother (although the girls do not know at first that she is sick). Lily is shy and quiet, Sam is a stereotypical teenager, and their mom is in over her head. The three have experienced death before when Lily and Sam's father died in a car accident. That was a more sudden tragedy where this time they are watching their love one fade. Lily makes a deal with a tiger to tell it stories to save her grandmother.
The plot was interesting but Keller tries to tackle a lot in one book and not one part received the attention it deserved. Character wise, Lily sounded a lot younger that what she was supposed to be. She is supposed be an almost 7th grader but did not come off that way. There were parts where it sounded like an adult trying to sound like a kid. Ricky and Jensen were absolutely not needed or needed to have more to do with the story.
Overall, not a bad read- just disappointing.

Despite being a Newbery winner, (I read this one for grad school class) I did not particularly love this one. It felt like a book that adults like for kids rather than one kids would actually like. It does have a lot of beautiful, deep ideas about stories and identity, but I think the magical realism and slow pacing will turn off a lot of readers. However, the storytelling parts were definitely my favorites. It also kind of reminded me of the style of A Monster Calls and The Girl Who Drank the Moon, so maybe students who enjoy that style of writing will also enjoy this book!

By the time I finished this book, I was a soppy mess. A bit slow to develop for somebody used to action-packed fantasy tales, it sent up some emotional waterworks at the end
