Some may find this story slow, but I found it enjoyable and endearing. I loved learning about Korean traditions, the idea of star stories, and being there for family when it matters most. I hope kids enjoy it!
Eeeeh. I liked it at the beginning and stories and Tiger plotline but the ending and themes stole away much of the magic of the first part for me. I didn’t like that nothing was explained about why visions of tigers and yet it’s decided that it’s all allegorical and it was all in her imagination. As I primarily read fantasy I was a bit bummed about that.
Also not into books with themes of death and dealing with loss in general.
I can see why it won awards— I mean most award winning books manage to be fairly depressing, bonus these days if they have somebody lgbtq in them too. This will probably scar kids in lit classes just like Bridge to Terabinthia has for years.

So expertly written. I found this to be the perfect blend of fantasy elements into a great coming of age tale that deals with personal history, family, and loss. Readers who like mythical and adventure elements will really like this, and it also has great sibling and friendship dynamics.
Graphic: Cancer, Death, Grief
Moderate: Vomit
Minor: Death of parent
4.5
This is a bittersweet and wholesome ‘coming-of-age’ story of this young girl Lily, who moves with her family to live with her grandmother and starts seeing this tiger following her. She recognises the tiger from the stories her grandmother told her and decides to find a way to trap it to protect her grandmother.
Damn I haven’t cried this much in a while...
I love how the story manages to discuss several themes and topics so easily without any of them feeling very surface level. It touches on intergenerational trauma, heritage and culture, etc but most importantly on stories and memories. We get these little short tales told to us like we’re the main character listening to her grandmother tell a tale and they’re weaved into the main story seamlessly, presenting some really beautiful parallels. It also stresses on the teller/narrator of these stories, the power they hold and how these stories can easily shift and change through time and people.
Stories aren’t about order or organisations, they’re about feelings, and feelings don’t always make sense.”
I love the family dynamics in the story, it is such an important factor and every member is written so well. The sister relationship is so well done and these kids/teens feel so real, I really connected with them. The story also deals with grief and the effects of that on a child which I thought was done beautifully. So many beautifully written lines in here with little nuggets of wisdom and lessons. Ahh
”People always say someone lives on in your memory, but we can’t remember everything.”
Highly recommend if you’re looking for a wholesome, well written middle grade book to just feel things, I don’t know.
