“Halmoni glows with both fierceness and kindness. It’s like she’s lit up from the inside, like she has stars burning inside her.”

I adored Keller's writing in this. The magical realism element was beautiful and though it stumped me at times, the folklore woven through made so much sense at the end that it elevated the entire read for me. Lily was such a relatable character. I had no idea that this was the book I needed to read, but wow did it find me at the right time. I wasn’t expecting the emotional impact it gave, or the help to heal from trauma. Fast, important read. I can’t imagine anyone would regret picking this up.

A story about the power of stories. And also sisterhood, family, grief, culture, and figuring yourself out. Sweet and emotion. I love the characters and their relationships. A little slow in places, but really beautiful.

It took me a little longer to get into the book and I think the narrator is why, not to say she was bad but I just wasn’t connecting with the story thru her voice. So if I read this again I’ll definitely read it physically. But once the story started rolling I really enjoyed the story qualities from the grandmother and all the family bonding that took place.
