I'm not going to lie, I'm so fucking tired of underage protagonists. Please, for the love of God, give me a thirty-something falling in love with the eons-old faerie prince. Our protagonist is seventeen, a fact that is obscured for the first few chapters. Once learning this, however, it becomes impossible to read the book without seeing all her choices as lovesick and foolhardy.

If you are seventeen, or younger, this is probably a great book though.

If you’re up for a fast read with an interesting enemies-to-lovers plot, including a powerful yet endearing fairy prince, this will be right up your alley. The romance started off a bit clumsy to me and even though I might have enjoyed an elaborate buildup - and solid foundation for feelings to grow on - probably a lot more … sometimes this is simply the way people fall in love. Some love stories don’t take over four books to get to the point. I’ve learnt I can appreciate the ‘shortcuts’ as well as the careful, dwindling paths. 🤍

I can also appreciate both Isobel and Rook’s flaws. Perfect characters make it harder to relate to their struggles. Just like it happened to Isobel, all sides to Rook (even the less charming ones) grew on me and I could certainly understand Isobel’s Craft being the very thing that gives her life, despite not being immortal. Solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ rating from me!

This book made me realize that fae love interests are literally the new vampires. I am ready to die on this hill.

I also strongly believe that books should not all be rated on the same scale but according to what the are trying to be. I'm pretty sure this book was trying to be an emotional and whimsical fantasy romance so... I think it succeeded! I love an easy fantasy romance *standalone* where I don't have to get invested in a series of 3+ books. The world was interesting, the relationship was spicy (very questionable imo, but spicy), and the ending was satisfying while still leaving things to the imagination. Definitely will pick up the newer Margaret Rogerson.

Beautifully written - I was enchanted by the emotive language and descriptions of the landscapes and magic within.
