I can't decide if it was all the hype about this book or the audiobook narrator...but this was kind of a miss for me. I like Kristin Hannah's books well enough, but I don't know that I loved her take on WWII. I did enjoy the setting in France, but the story felt often convenient and predictable. I prefer The Great Alone for her books, and for WWII I'd recommend many others before this.

I was on a waitlist at my local library for this book to come in, and while waiting I read two other Kristin Hannah books (which I loved). The Nightingale, however, took me a while to settle into. I felt that Vianne could have done more from the beginning of her reunion with Isabelle to explain what she went through as a young newlywed that had experienced the loss of a child. Some of Vianne's actions frustrated me- like a love story where no one says what's really on their mind and they spend the entire book making foolish choices that could have been resolved with a simple, direct conversation.

Having read similar novels like, All the Light We Cannot See and Sarah's Key, this one missed the mark for me.

This fucking book just ripped my heart out. I cried. Everyone who raves about it says “you’ll cry”, I guess I wasn’t expecting it but the whole end of this book just killed me.

I love me some WWII historical fiction. As horrible as a time it was it’s still my favorite time period to learn about and read about. Last year at this time of year I read a WWII book and I want to do it every year now after.

This was so heartbreaking and you really felt for everyone. I loved the two sisters. We see how different but headstrong Isabelle and Vianne both are. We see how truly amazing the both of them are.

Everyone needs to read this. As much as it ripped me apart I loved it to pieces at the same time. Please everyone read it!
