2-1/2 rounded up to 3 stars. I loved the five Parasol Protectorate series books, and it was delightful to get back into that world (hence the 3 star round up). I was also so sad when this romance couldn't last in the last PP book and excited to see it return in this one. But overall I was disappointed. I don't want to spoil anything so I'll just say that the mystery plot didn't work for me, and the action in the story ran the gamut between drawn out too long, over too soon, and not drawn out long enough.

“How do you feel about purple curtains?”

“What shade of purple?”

“My point exactly!”

Biffy being a misunderstood artist of interior decoration is beautifully reminiscent of the main series. The author can't write slash worth a brown set of curtains, though, so in that, the novella is a bit dull.

Channing had, under most circumstances, a decidedly overwhelming effect on females of all species. Until he opened his mouth, of course.

Channing's hilarity is criminally understated. He needs his own book! [b:Oh, wait...|39682023|How to Marry a Werewolf (Claw & Courtship, #1)|Gail Carriger|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1522383156l/39682023._SX50_.jpg|57042640]

Slow burn that turns into absolutely no steam. This is not a stand alone (which I knew going in), but I am not willing to read f/m romance so I didn't read the first story. There is a trend going with mainly f/m romance series having one m/m romance thrown in and I have read several of those and have found that I am able to follow the story and get the universe rules that the author created for their world, but that was not true here. The story was fine but it should have been a chapter in a longer book; it didn't seem like a complete story. I would almost say this book is appropriate for teens, but if I had been given it as a teen I would have been sadly disappointed about the lack of sex scenes or romance at all.
I did like it well enough, but I wouldn't recommend reading it by itself or hoping for more than a tiny bit of romance.

Precisely the read I needed this fine morning.
