incredibly astute

Dr. Ambedkar tackles one of the most sophisticated social constructs very elegantly. He lays out his thesis expertly so that even people unfamiliar with the concept of caste in Indian society can follow along. This is the first work of Dr. Ambedkar that I have had the opportunity to read and will definitely not be the last.

I am forever glad that my first book of the year is a seminal seminal work by Ambedkar and what can only be described by a multitude of adjectives - all of them being synonyms of the word 'phenomenal'.

And, that would still be an understatement.

Very clear message about the source of Castes in India. This book would build the foundation to understand Castes from its origin.

As we stumble upon the stairs of social structure defined by predominant ranks, we grasp for a stick to steady ourselves. For centuries, we have silently followed these structures, which degrade generations through feeble grounds. The Aryans, Dravidians, Mongolians, and Scythians all found their way into the country by fighting hard battles, and the resulting culture has elements of capitalism. Although everyone accepted the presence of other surviving races, the ladder of caste was created to ensure survival among each other. Endogamy is a unique characteristic of caste in Indian society, but it is only one aspect of how caste has formed distinct groups.

Class is still dominant over caste in terms of hierarchy, but if those within the class take notable steps towards exogamy and reject the notion of a capitalistic existence, there is hope. However, in such a reactionary and moderately built society, this seems unthinkable or impractical.

When I first picked up "The Annihilation of Caste", I had negative preconceptions about it. If you have observed the Indian political landscape long enough, you will understand that Ambedkar's name is popularly used by proponents of a certain brand of politics. Over the last three days, I've ploughed through 3 of his works. emerging humbler and more knowledgeable and most importantly, more Indian, that I was before. This essay should have been titled "The Unravelling of Caste". If annihilation of caste was a discourse on the question 'Why should caste be eliminated?' This books delves into the question, 'How did caste system came into being?'

I recommend scribbling and organising ideas along with the ones from the other two books.
But one question remains:Where would these discourses find a place, in a Post-Reservation-India?

I'd rate this book higher if I could. Dr. Ambedkar's work is very detailed, well researched and a must-read for every Indian, especially every Hindu.

That feeling after reading a piece or listening an interview of a scholar and you are just filled with reverence and awe. Experienced after reading this small piece of paper presented by Dr. Ambedkar, the parallels he have drawn on the means, customs and their origins of the caste system is beyond my imagination. Do read it if you want to understand the origin deep rooted evil in the name of caste system.
