As usual very nice language and well done characters. But I found the story vs. flashback structure a bit overcomplicated and was a bit annoyed by it. But I have to say that the ending was a real gut punch that travelled with me for a few days. I believe this was only because of the structure that served a point in the end.
Banks is always enjoyable. Do not start with this but read it nontheless.

It took me a while to get into the tempo of this one. I'll probably want to re-read it in a year or so.

Part of the Culture series. In this installment, we get a version of the Culture that looks a lot like the USA’s CIA at the height of its imperialist ambitions. Not my favorite take on that society, nor my favorite book on the Culture.

But it’s worth the read because the structure of the story is really well done (to say more would spoil the experience IMO), and the character who drives the story is equally interesting.
