'Use of Weapons' is one of Iain M. Banks 'Culture' novels. This work had the most introspection by a character that I've encountered for some time. The book is still science fiction with travel through space to various planets and the use of other high technologies, yet it is centered most around the interactions, feelings and efforts of people. The machinations of the Culture, which intervenes with other civilizations through the agents of 'Special Circumstances' present themselves to set a particular agent into motion.
