I had trouble finishing this book. It had some very shocking parts, more disgusting along with shocking honestly, but I can handle that if the story is good. This story didn't really grip me and I nearly took it back to the library without even bothering to find out how it ended. However, I decided to go ahead and finish it just in case it had a spectacular ending or something. It didn't really. It's not a horrible book, but I have read much better from this author.

Every once in a while I have to read a murder and mayhem book. I mean, after luxuriating in The Help.... That's when I turn to Patterson. Sometimes I only get a couple of chapters into his books before trashing them. But once in a while I get through a book -- like this one. Many people die as a Mexican drug lord basically declares war on the United States. There is indeed much death and destruction. Of course, the good guys prevail; the bad guys get the crap beaten out of them -- but not before inflicting a whole lot of damage. This is all done within a semblance of a plot and characters who are a cut, but just a cut, above 2-dimensional. But what does Patterson care what I think? He has the formula down pat and is laughing all the way to the bank. If you like shoot 'em up books, you'll probably enjoy this one.

In the latest Bennett novel, Patterson tackles some new scenery to spin the tale a little more than the usual NYC setting. After Bennett aids in the capture of a major drug kingpin, his family is put into Witness Protection and shuttled off to the middle of nowhere California. While battling with his children's boredom and a reversion to life as farmhands, Bennett soon learns that the kingpin has escaped and resumed his settling of scores, which includes hunting down the Bennett family and killing them all. Brought back onto the case by the FBI, Bennett must track down this crazed criminal before he enacts the ultimate crime, killing the brood of 12 still in hiding. With some time spent discussing the ongoing relationship with nanny Mary Catherine, Patterson adds a layer of Bennett's persona while also tugging at his heart strings when it comes to his family's protection. A decent read for fans of the Bennett series, though stellar is surely not a word best used to describe the tale.

Patterson has an on-again, off-again ability to churn out decent fiction. With his numerous series on the go simultaneously, it is no surprise that the unique ideas fade in his mind. Yet, as he teams up with other writers, one would presume two heads are better than one and that more poignant and sophisticated plots and dialogue could emerge. Then again, perhaps the quick 'beach read' is the goal, easy to polish a book off while sipping a bevvy and enjoying the poolside banter.

Decent work Mr. Patterson. You keep your work consistent, which one would usually applaud. That said, I have seen your power and wonder if it is time to focus on a few projects and not line your pockets with profits from books sold simply because you attach your name to them.

The last book in this series ended in a cliff-hanger. Gone finishes the story. It continues with the gruesome violence found in the last book offset with the usual family humor found in this series. I was left feeling that I've had enough Patterson for a while.

I have the say, if it weren't for the latter part of the story, I probably would have rated this a little lower. The first 2/3 of the book were kind of boring with all the "farm" tasks and activities. However, once Mike joined back up with Emily from the FBI, then it started getting good. The ending was great too. Lastly, I just gotta say this again, because it really needs to be said, the whole lot of nothing not going on between Mike and MC is SOOO BORING!!!!! I actually, skim through those parts. Either move forward or move on.
